Little upgrades, outfits that look rich
BY: Anita Wawira
Let's be honest nobody wants to look like they're trying too hard. But we all want to walk into a room and have people quietly wonder, "Where do they shop?" The good news? You don't need to empty your wallet to pull that off. Sometimes the difference between an outfit that looks cheap and one that looks expensive is just a few small, smart choices. Here's how to make them.
Fix How Your Clothes Fit
This one is so simple it almost feels like cheating. A well-fitted outfit will always beat an expensive one that doesn't sit right on your body. Always.
That nice shirt that's just a little too boxy? Take it to a tailor. A basic pair of trousers that fits you perfectly looks more expensive than designer ones that are too long or too loose. Most tailoring alterations cost very little, and the difference they make is massive. If something doesn't fit well off the rack don't suffer through it. Get it fixed.
Pay Attention to Your Shoes
Shoes can make or break everything. You could be wearing the most put-together outfit from head to knee, and then dirty, worn-out shoes at the bottomand suddenly it all falls apart.
You don't need ten pairs of shoes. You need a few pairs that are clean, in good condition, and match the vibe of what you're wearing. Leather shoes that are polished. Sneakers that are actually white (not grey-white). Sandals without cracked soles. Keep them clean, keep them in shape, and your whole look levels up automatically.
Swap Out Cheap-Looking Accessories
Here's a small secret accessories are where your outfit either goes up or down. A thin, shiny plastic belt? It cheapens everything around it. A simple leather belt in a neutral colour? Suddenly your whole outfit looks intentional.
The same goes for bags and jewellery. You don't need to spend a fortune you just need to choose pieces that look clean and simple rather than flashy and overdone. Less is genuinely more here. One good watch, one simple necklace, one bag that's in good shape that's all it takes. Clutter reads as cheap. Simplicity reads as expensive.
Tuck, Half-Tuck, or Tie Something
This sounds too easy, but try it. Take a basic t-shirt and jeans. Now tuck the front of the t-shirt in loosely what people call a "half-tuck." Immediately it looks like you planned the outfit. It looks styled. It looks like you know what you're doing.
The way you wear something matters just as much as what you're wearing. A button-up shirt left fully untucked with all the buttons open over a plain tee looks sloppy. The same shirt half-tucked with the top two buttons undone? Effortless and put-together. Small move, big difference.
Choose Colours That Work Together
You don't need to wear all black to look polished (though that works too). You just need to make sure your colours actually talk to each other. Outfits that look expensive usually have a colour story two or three colours that feel like they belong together.
Neutral tones are the easiest place to start: white, beige, black, navy, grey, brown. They almost always work together, and they're easy to mix without overthinking it. Once you get comfortable with neutrals, you can start adding one pop of colour at a time. The key is intention it should look like you chose those colours together, not like you grabbed whatever was clean.
Take Care of Your Clothes
This one is boring but important. Clothes that are pilled, wrinkled, faded, or have loose threads look cheap no matter the brand. Meanwhile, clothes that are clean, pressed, and well-kept look expensive even when they're not.
Iron or steam your clothes before you wear them. Deal with pills using a fabric shaver (they cost next to nothing). Wash dark clothes inside out to keep them from fading. Store things properly so they don't lose their shape. It takes a little effort, but it means your clothes last longer and always look their best.
It's Not About Spending More
Here's the thing style isn't really about money. It's about attention. When you pay attention to how your clothes fit, how you put them together, and how you take care of them, you naturally start to look more put-together. More polished. More like someone who knows exactly what they're doing.
And that? That never goes out of style.
